The conversion between yards and metres is exact. Since 1959, the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 metres by international agreement between the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. This means 1 yard = 91.44 centimetres = 914.4 millimetres — all exact values with no rounding.
The table below covers commonly used yard values from 1 yard to 2,000 yards with exact metre equivalents, plus centimetre and kilometre equivalents for reference.

Since 1959, the international yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 metres by international agreement. This makes every yard-to-metre conversion perfectly precise — 100 yards is exactly 91.44 metres, not approximately. Before 1959, the UK and USA used slightly different values for the yard.
The yard is divided into 3 feet, each of 12 inches, giving 36 inches per yard. Since 1 foot = 12 × 25.4mm = 304.8mm exactly, 1 yard = 3 × 304.8mm = 914.4mm = 91.44cm = 0.9144m — all exact values.
One statute mile equals exactly 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet — and therefore exactly 1,609.344 metres or approximately 1.609 kilometres. The UK still uses miles for road distances and speed limits, while athletics and cycling use kilometres.
A common point of confusion: a metre is longer than a yard by approximately 9.36%. Specifically, 1 metre = 1.09361 yards. So 100 metres ≈ 109.36 yards — this is why the 100m sprint is slightly longer than 100 yards, and 1km is slightly longer than 1,000 yards (which would be 914.4m).
Despite the UK’s official adoption of metric measurement, UK golf courses universally measure distances in yards — scorecard yardages, GPS devices, and distance markers all use yards. This is consistent with golf internationally, as even countries that otherwise use metric (Australia, Europe) often display golf distances in yards.
The cricket pitch is exactly 22 yards long — a measurement deriving from the chain, an old surveying unit (1 chain = 22 yards = 20.1168m). The 22-yard pitch is defined in the Laws of Cricket and is one of the most precisely specified dimensions in any sport. It is exactly 20.1168 metres.
Fabric in the UK was traditionally sold by the yard, and many older patterns and instructions still use yards. 1 yard of fabric = 0.9144m. A standard bolt of fabric is typically 50–60 metres (55–66 yards). Some specialist fabric suppliers still sell in yards to this day.
UK horse racing distances are measured in furlongs, miles, and yards. One furlong = 220 yards = 201.168 metres. Distances such as “1 mile 2 furlongs” (= 1,760 + 440 = 2,200 yards = 2,011.68m) or “5 furlongs” (= 1,100 yards = 1,005.84m) are exclusively imperial in UK racing.
The UK legally adopted the metric system for most official purposes, but imperial units remain legal for: road distances and speed limits (miles/mph); draught beer and cider (pints); and as supplementary indications alongside metric in trade. Yards appear in the Weights and Measures Act 1985 as a permitted supplementary unit for road signs.
UK land area is now officially measured in hectares and square metres for planning, but many people still think in acres and square yards. 1 square yard = 0.8361 m². An acre = 4,840 square yards = 4,046.86 m² = 0.4047 hectares. A football pitch (105m × 68m) is approximately 7,140 m² or 8,540 square yards.
A full-size snooker table is 12 feet × 6 feet (4 yards × 2 yards), which is exactly 3.6576m × 1.8288m. The playing area (inside the cushions) is 11 feet 8.5 inches × 5 feet 10 inches — another example of UK sport retaining imperial dimensions.
The easiest mental conversion: 1 yard ≈ 91.5cm ≈ nearly 1 metre. For rough estimates, treating 1 yard as 1 metre introduces only a 9.4% error — acceptable for casual use. For greater accuracy: 10 yards ≈ 9.1 metres or 11 yards ≈ 10 metres.
One yard is exactly 0.9144 metres. This is an exact, internationally defined conversion — not an approximation. So 1 yard = 0.9144m = 91.44cm = 914.4mm. To convert any number of yards to metres, multiply by 0.9144. To convert metres to yards, divide by 0.9144 (or multiply by 1.09361).
One metre equals exactly 1 ÷ 0.9144 = 1.09361 yards (to 5 decimal places). A metre is slightly longer than a yard — by about 9.36%. So 10 metres = 10.936 yards, and 100 metres = 109.361 yards. This is why the 100m Olympic sprint is slightly longer than the old 100-yard sprint.
The most accurate quick method: multiply by 0.9144. For a mental approximation: multiply by 9 and divide by 10 (gives a result about 1.6% below the exact value — close enough for most purposes). Another useful shortcut: 11 yards ≈ 10.06 metres, so if you know a distance in yards, divide by 11 and multiply by 10 for a rough metric equivalent. Example: 55 yards ÷ 11 × 10 = 50m (exact: 50.292m — within 0.6%).
100 yards is exactly 91.44 metres (100 × 0.9144 = 91.44). This is one of the most commonly used conversions in UK sport. 100 yards is slightly less than 100 metres — the 100-yard sprint, popular before metrication, was slightly shorter than the modern 100m sprint. The world record for 100 yards was 9.0 seconds (by Bob Hayes in 1963); for comparison, 100m world record is 9.58 seconds (Usain Bolt, 2009) — over a slightly longer distance.
200 yards is exactly 182.88 metres (200 × 0.9144). This is a common distance in swimming (4 lengths of a 50m pool = 200m ≈ 218.7 yards), golf (a medium-length par 3), and shooting (a standard rifle range distance). It is approximately 0.183 kilometres or 0.114 miles.
440 yards is exactly 402.336 metres (440 × 0.9144). The 440-yard run — a quarter-mile — was a standard sprint distance before metrication replaced it with the 400m. The difference is 2.336 metres, meaning 400m is very slightly shorter than 440 yards. Many old athletics records for the 440 yards are close to but not directly comparable with modern 400m times.
A yard is slightly shorter than a metre. Specifically: 1 yard = 0.9144 metres, so a yard is about 8.56% shorter than a metre (or equivalently, a metre is about 9.36% longer than a yard). Both units measure length, but they come from different measurement systems — the yard from the traditional imperial/customary system and the metre from the International System of Units (SI), originally defined as 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the North Pole to the equator along a meridian through Paris.
UK golf courses use yards because golf is an international sport with deeply ingrained imperial traditions, particularly in the UK and USA where the sport developed. The yard became the universal golf measurement, and even as most countries metricated their everyday measurements, golf retained yards for consistency across international play. GPS devices, rangefinders, and course management systems worldwide are typically set to yards by default (with metres as an option). Switching UK golf to metres would require reprinting all scorecards, repositioning distance markers, and reprogramming all GPS systems — there has been no industry appetite to make this change.
First, divide metres by 0.9144 to get total yards in decimal form. Then take the whole number for yards, and multiply the decimal part by 3 to get feet. For example, 50 metres ÷ 0.9144 = 54.6807 yards = 54 yards and (0.6807 × 3) = 2.04 feet — so 54 yards 2 feet (with a small fraction of an inch remaining). The converter above does this calculation automatically.
